Tamil Nadu State Land Use Research Board was constituted in 2011 as a permanent body in the State Planning Commission to take up activities for the conservation of land and water resources and their sustained use to the best possible advantage of the people in the State.

The rapidly growing need for real-time information for effective land use planning and governance has seeded the need for a dedicated body for Land Use Management and governance.

TNSLURB in association with institutions and organisations with domain expertise uses technology to realize its vision of sustainability and management, to arrive at various policy options besides enabling the State Planning Commission to hold Seminars/ Workshops and to take up studies on sustainable management of land & water resources. 

TNSLURB assists the government’s need for integrated planning through the convergence of modern geospatial technologies with conventional strategies in providing the information required. It aims the development of data-driven decision support system by utilising the datasets of land parameters, thematic maps, land use information, and sustainable management strategies.

Administration of the TNSLURB is taken care by the Land Use Vertical of the State Planning Commission.

Timeline

1975

Tamil Nadu State Land Use Board(SLUB)was established in 1975 with the Minister for Agriculture as its Chairman under the Department of Agriculture

1981

Tamil Nadu State Land Use Board(SLUB) was disbanded and functions of the State Land Use Board were transferred to the State Planning Commission

1990

State Land Use Board was reconstituted with a Member (Agriculture) as Chairman and Secretaries to Government and Heads of Departments concerned with Land and Water use as its members

2000

The Government of India moved to Macro Management Mode to support the States in the development of Agriculture including Horticulture crops, Land development & Soil conservation

2009

State Government fully funded the works of SLUB and directed it to address the needs of Agriculture and Forestry Sectors

2011

Tamil Nadu State Land Use Research Board(TNSLURB) was established as a permanent body in the State Planning Commission

Fostering Integrated Spatial Planning

To strengthen the overall culture of integrated spatial and perspective land use planning at different spatial levels by engaging with various stakeholders through a participatory approach and collaborations.

Preserving Ecological Significance

To identify sensitive ecosystems, potential agricultural lands, and lands of heritage importance, to recommend conservation measures and their sustainable management to the State Government.

Capacity Building and Collaboration

To enhance the capacity building of the departments, student communities in the universities, local bodies, and civil society organizations in the stream of land use planning and sustainable management.

Technology-Driven Solutions

To generate and institutionalize technology-based integrative applications and solutions that provide extensive analysis of land and resources through the use of data with horizontal and vertical linkages for effective use in analysis, planning, and decision-making.

Geospatial Support for Government Initiatives

Using geospatial techniques to support the State Government in the development and management of activities/programs related to surveying and mapping of natural resources, mapping of land use and water resources, surveying of mineral resources, development of watersheds, mapping of forest cover, analysis of environmental impact, etc.

Administration

The Land Use Division under the State Planning Commission (SPC) collaborates with various state government departments, academic institutions, research organizations, and other agencies to oversee the activities of TNSLURB. The division is responsible for calling for research proposals, screening them, apprising the board, organizing meetings, workshops, and conducting studies on current issues and challenges related to land use to provide recommendations to the government.

The division also undertakes internal research studies and collaborates with research institutes and academia to conduct assessments. The division organizes workshops, bringing together key stakeholders and experts, with a primary focus on analysing emerging issues in land use, land resources, and land degradation. The overarching goal is to evaluate the impact of various policies and developmental programs in these domains.

TNSLURB administration is committed to fostering effective collaboration, conducting comprehensive research, and providing strategic recommendations to enhance land use management and policy implementation in Tamil Nadu.

The composition of the division is as follows – Head of Division (in the level of Deputy Conservator of Forests), Planning officer, technical assistants and Planning Assistants. TNSLURB also has post of Senior Research Fellow to assist the Board in coordinating the research activities and to engage in in-house studies.
